Properly implemented, AI can relieve doctors of some tasks, allowing them to spend more time with patients or rest, ultimately aiming to improve health outcomes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>But the real question is what do doctors themselves think about artificial intelligence technologies in healthcare?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two German researchers, Sophie Isabelle Lambert and Murielle Madi, set out to understand the medical community&#8217;s evolving relationship with artificial intelligence and to identify the factors that most influence doctors&#8217; acceptance of AI tools.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41746-023-00852-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">comprehensive review published in the prestigious journal Nature<\/a>, they analyzed more than 21,000 (!!) publications, ultimately selecting 42 studies that met their rigorous criteria. This is also reflected in doctors&#8217; opinions after pilot implementations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.5210%2Fojphi.v9i3.8149\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">studies<\/a> show that physicians believe that clinical decision support systems (CDSS) <strong>reduce the rate<\/strong> of medical errors through alerts and recommendations<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In another <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016%2Fj.wneu.2020.10.171\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>, 85% of 100 surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses <strong>found alerts useful<\/strong> for early detection of complications.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <a href=\"http:\/\/scholar.google.com\/scholar_lookup?&amp;title=Evaluation%20of%20knowledge%20and%20attitudes%20of%20radiology%20department%20workers%20about%20artificial%20intelligence&amp;journal=Ann.%20Clin.%20Anal.%20Med.&amp;volume=12&amp;pages=186-190&amp;publication_year=2021&amp;author=Yurdaisik%2CI&amp;author=Aksoy%2CSH\">survey<\/a> of radiology department workers, 51.9% of participants think that AI applications <strong>will save time for radiologists.<\/strong><\/span> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/doi\/10.1186\/s12911-015-0205-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Research<\/a> projects focused on the adoption of AI in radiology and the integration of machine learning into clinical operations, medical doctors and nursing staff viewed <strong>AI as precise and grounded in ample scientific proof<\/strong> when it came to diagnosis, impartiality, and information quality.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Implementing these systems in emergency rooms (ERs), however, could lead to an <a href=\"http:\/\/scholar.google.com\/scholar_lookup?&amp;title=Investigating%20the%20barriers%20to%20physician%20adoption%20of%20an%20artificial%20intelligence-based%20decision%20support%20system%20in%20emergency%20care%3A%20an%20interpretative%20qualitative%20study&amp;journal=Stud.%20Health%20Technol.%20Inform.&amp;volume=270&amp;pages=1001-1005&amp;publication_year=2018&amp;author=Petitgand%2CC&amp;author=Motulsky%2CA&amp;author=Denis%2CJL&amp;author=R%C3%A9gis%2CC\">increase in errors<\/a>. A separate <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093%2Fckj%2Fsfv130\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> identified usability challenges, with respondents reporting alert fatigue due to the high volume of alerts and a tendency for some physicians to disregard them.<\/span><\/p>        <\/div>\n      \n      \n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"lazyblock-text-Z9b1CH wp-block-lazyblock-text\" id=\"What-worries-do-doctors-have-about-AI-in-medicine\">\n  <div style=\"--size-margin-text-block: 70px;\" class=\"lazyblocks-text-wrapper wp-block-lazyblock-text\" id=\"What-worries-do-doctors-have-about-AI-in-medicine\">\n    <div class=\"lazyblocks-text-columns-wrapper\">\n              <div class=\"lazyblocks-text-column\n                  lazyblocks-text-column-border\n                          lazyblocks-text-big-font-quote\n        \" style=\"--size-padding-text-block: 70px;\">\n          <h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What worries do doctors have about AI in medicine?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In the studies cited, physicians&#8217; concerns about using AI tools relate to 5 areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reliability,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transparency,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Legal clarity,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Efficiency in terms of time and workload<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being replaced by AI<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concerns about the reliability of AI systems<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several studies revealed a recurring theme regarding reliability: concern about the <strong>quality of the obtained information.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 3 <a href=\"http:\/\/scholar.google.com\/scholar_lookup?&amp;title=Investigating%20the%20barriers%20to%20physician%20adoption%20of%20an%20artificial%20intelligence-based%20decision%20support%20system%20in%20emergency%20care%3A%20an%20interpretative%20qualitative%20study&amp;journal=Stud.%20Health%20Technol.%20Inform.&amp;volume=270&amp;pages=1001-1005&amp;publication_year=2018&amp;author=Petitgand%2CC&amp;author=Motulsky%2CA&amp;author=Denis%2CJL&amp;author=R%C3%A9gis%2CC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">surveys<\/a>, participants found it <strong>insufficient<\/strong> to correctly make a diagnosis, which translated into a general doubt about the <strong>accuracy of diagnostic systems<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In another <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016%2Fj.drugalcdep.2018.10.006\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>, respondents noted that decision support systems can be helpful but have limited capabilities. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">49.3% of physicians in a <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/doi\/10.1186\/s12913-021-07044-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">survey<\/a> evaluating the use of artificial intelligence in ophthalmology indicated that the quality of the system is <strong>difficult to guarantee<\/strong><\/span><strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>        <\/div>\n      \n      \n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"lazyblock-inner-kWl2D wp-block-lazyblock-inner\">\n<div class=\"lazyblock-inner-block-section wp-block-lazyblock-inner\">\n    \n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"509\" src=\"https:\/\/nubisoft.io\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Distribution-of-Concerns-about-AI-in-Ophthalmology-2-1-1024x509.png\" alt=\"A bar graph shows the top five concerns about artificial intelligence among 562 respondents. The same proportion of respondents indicated &#8220;controversial software reliability&#8221; as a barrier<\/li>\n<li>One <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016%2Fj.ijmedinf.2020.104233\">study<\/a> investigating factors affecting the adoption of CDSS systems found that they were perceived as time-consuming due to the need for manual data entry and the steep learning curve associated with new software<\/li>\n<li>Doctors involved in the robotic surgery <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0213840\">study<\/a> were concerned that some procedures involving artificial intelligence tools might take longer, but nurses and other operating room staff did not share these concerns.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limited understanding of how the tool works<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/artificial-intelligence\/articles\/10.3389\/frai.2022.879603\/full\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conducted a multidisciplinary analysis of AI transparency in healthcare, examining both legal frameworks and technical perspectives. Participants in two studies have highlighted the importance of confidentiality, indicating that AI systems should effectively uphold this principle.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concerns that AI will take over healthcare jobs<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>A major concern among healthcare professionals is the potential for AI to replace them.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fear that AI will replace doctors is widespread and varies by specialty and career stage. It&#8217;s hard to say for sure that all doctors are afraid of AI.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36117979\/\">this comprehensive systematic review<\/a> of physicians&#8217; and medical students&#8217; acceptance, understanding, and attitudes toward clinical AI, it can be said that most physicians do not significantly fear being completely replaced by AI:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the majority of studies (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36117979\/\">31 out of 40<\/a>) that addressed this topic, less than half of respondents believed AI could replace human physicians.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the authors&#8217; own survey, 68% of respondents disagreed that physicians will be replaced by AI in the future.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is worth noting, however, that according to some studies, certain medical specialties still have concerns about AI. The problem is significant because in another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/doi\/10.1007\/s10916-021-01727-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study, <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nearly 40% of anesthesiologists said <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they could not seamlessly integrate the system into their clinical routine.
